The Empyrean Knights are servants and heralds of the Archons, god-like beings that occupy the various affinity realms. Assuming the role of armored warriors, each knight dutifully follows the orders of their masters. The current events in the world have forced the Knights and HonorBound to work together in order to accomplish their goal - however, they are grudging allies at best.
