The Mechanics of Researching

Scholars

The first step in research is to get a Scholar that can do it for you. From there you can acquire more scholars to do more research at the same time. Your research basement can have up to 5 Scholars. The first one is free and the others can be purchased with gems, each more expensive than the previous one.

Each Scholar can do research, which take different amounts of time to perform depending on the category and rank of the subject. Even when you are offline, your scholars will do their duty, so do not worry about being offline. You can also speed up their research with diamonds. The cost to instantly finish the research is probably based on several different factors so it is very difficult to calculate the ratio. The last 5 minutes of any research is free.

Different kinds of research

There are 4 different categories of research: 

• Commander Research: The main research section. You will find everything related to your commander, coins, embers, mana and shops. 
• Class Research: There are separate ranks, attributes and abilities that can be researched for each hero class.
• Alchemy Research: Enables you to convert embers to coins and vice-versa.
• Artifact Research: Unlock mines with Treasure Maps, get resources with Resource Cache, and with Ancestral Knowledge books, you can get runes or diamonds. Here, you will find special items that need to be researched in order to move the storyline forward.

Artifact Researches

Treasure Map

• Unlocks mines which give more gold upon completion than regular maps.

• Source: Storyline missions.

Resource Cache

• You can find diamonds, runes, healing potions and resurrection scrolls after researching.
• Source: Treasure chests.

Ancestral Knowledge

• Have longer research times than Resource caches, but give more rare rewards as well. Possible rewards are silver runes, premium runes or diamonds.

• There is a visual difference between the Ancestral Knowledge books that hint at the quality and quantity of the prize. Current books progress in the following order: Red -> Orange -> Yellow -> Green -> Light Blue -> Dark Blue. The book on the right is orange rather than red.

Strange Artifact/Archon Fragment

• After being researched (15 mins), a researcher will unlock new maps to explore, sending the player on a journey to recover the remaining Archon Artifacts, in the process meeting 3 new legendaries.
